The Metaphors Used
Author’s Reflection
Rico Respicio
“The Allegory of the Cave” serves as a metaphor that represents us, humans, and on how we accept and take knowledge for granted. We, people, tend to only believe on the things that we know. We choose to think that our own perception and interpretation of things are what is right. However, often times, what we personally believe in is not actually the truth or correct. The Socratic dialogue provides a criticism on our ignorance and foolishness in resisting knowledge and facts that are presented to us. Moreover, “The Allegory of the Cave” helps in the improvement of the body of knowledge we have in the present time, in a way that it teaches people to not only be limited by the things that they know, and that they should also consider that there still a lot of things that are unknown. In this way, it helps in the continuous development of knowledge, as they are not kept limited to the things that they already knew. Undeniably, the truth hurts, but this truth destroys man’s ignorance.
