Hesiod
Father of Greek Didactic Poetry
Life, Work, and Contributions
Theogony
The Theogony Tackles These Main Areas:
Works and Days
Hesiod’s didactic poem “Works and Days” serves as a comprehensive guide to life, encompassing the agricultural rhythm of the farming year in its ‘Works’ section. The ‘Days’ portion, on the other hand, provides counsel on the auspicious or inauspicious times to undertake specific activities during the month.
Written as an address to his brother Perses, the poem urges reconciliation and dissuades him from engaging in unethical practices such as bribery and exploitation. Beyond the personal dispute, “Works and Days” emerges as a societal commentary, challenging injustices prevalent in Hesiod’s time and advocating for the transformative power of justice.
Hesiod passionately endorses the virtues of hard work and honest labor as pathways to prosperity and distinction, conveying a moral and ethical message that transcends his immediate familial concerns.
Notably, the poem lays out the “Five Ages of Man,” providing the earliest extant account of the successive ages of humanity, further solidifying “Works and Days” as a timeless literary work with enduring moral significance.
Author’s Reflection
Keith Argonza
Hesiod and his poems have greatly influenced the Greek mythology we have today. His literary pieces, specifically the Theogony, has became the foundation of the whole storyline of the Greek deities. It gave us an explanation on how the the world began and on how the Greek gods and goddesses are interrelated to one another, all based on his written myths. Moreover, according to him, the actions of the gods and goddesses can be used to explain certain things that we can observe in our surroundings.
If I were to be asked, most likely, his works have influenced us to believe in the presence of a supreme being. As evident as it is in our present society, most of us tend to believe that there is a greater power that controls and governs over us, humans, or yet the world we are living in. The concept of the world being made or created by a god was probably picked up from Hesiod and his myths. After all, even though fictional, Hesiod is one of those who has given explanation to things that we do not know yet, something that is beyond nature — metaphysics.
